May 10, 2010: Enduring Love

Any reference to 1 Corinthians 13 conjures up visions of wedding dresses, rented tuxedos, bouquets, and confetti. Although 1 Corinthians has nothing to do with romantic love or even for that matter “feelings,” it is understandable why this particular Scripture text is so popular with couples tying the knot. It talks about enduring love, the kind a love a couple would need if they want their relationship to survive and flourish for the long haul. adp paystatements homely.

Alas, we describe Love as incompletely as we describe God. We are all surrounded by those who claim they oppress us out of ‘love.’ What is Love? Even Paul shies away, using poetic metaphors but does not zero in on the crux of the matter.
As I claim those who oppress do not love, I wonder if I do in fact love. How can I tell?
1 Cor 13 was our wedding reading, used again 14 years later at our vow renewal. It’s as close as humans might get to this ‘Love’ concept. Just like the quest to discern the will of God in my life, seeking the meaning of Love seems to be a lifelong journey.
